Entry 192 : First Impressions - Leica SL (Typ 601)

Hi, there!
Before you continue reading my first impressions, take a look at my hands-on first impressions video here:

On November 20th, our local Leica representatives held a launching event for the latest and greatest from Leica:

Leica SL

The Leica SL flies off the pages due to its exceptional specs; some of the more significant ones are as below:
  • 24MP full frame CMOS sensor with no OLPF
  • Leica Maestro II image processor (also found in the full frame Leica Q)
  • Continuous high burst at 11 fps
  • 4K video in V-Log L Gamma
  • 4.4MP EyeRes EVF (0.66" at 0.8x magnification)
  • 2.95", 1.04 million-dot LED-backlit touch screen
  • Weather-resistant milled aluminium body
  • Built-in Wi-Fi & GPS
Download the brochure with all the specs here.

Frankly, I don't have too much to say about the camera, other than the things that I've already said in the video above.

In talks with Brian Sio, Leica SL Ambassador, we agreed that the camera is indeed of its own class; it is a behemoth that is fully enforced against the weather and shoots superb continuous high burst (like the Canon EOS 1D X or Nikon D4s), offers awesome cinematic 4K video (like the Sony A7 series), and also video customizability (like the Canon EOS 5D MkIII).

But the thing is, you can't really determine how good a camera is just by its specs alone.
In photography (and videography), words alone cannot describe the devils that lurk within the details of this machine.
Even so, here are some sample images in FULL RESOLUTION for you to look at and ponder upon.

It would be a great honor to do a full review of the Leica SL.
Of course, with such a premium price tag and a long queue of equally enthusiastic reviewers and photographers, I'm not holding my breath.
But still, one can hope.

Thanks for reading this very short first impressions entry.
I hope you liked the different approach to gear this time around.
